This year’s “Treehouse of Horrors” episode for The Simpsons is just around the corner, set to air Oct. 19 on Fox.
And it’s not just any holiday episode for a broadcast show - what began as a yearly Halloween-themed episode for the animated family has become a staple in the franchise and TV event in and of itself. The “Treehouse of Horror” episode often gets its own special theme, trailer, poster art and couch gag, often leading Fox to promote this night over the season premiere.
In honor of this year’s “Treehouse of Horror,” take a look back at some bits and pieces that made past years so memorable:
“Treehouse of Horror XIII:”
This year’s episode uses an epic film narrator to present the 13th installment: “the unluckiest treehouse of all.”
“Treehouse of Horror XX:”
The poster for the 20th “Treehouse of Horror” takes cues from Hitchcock, Sweeney Todd and zombies, winning an Annie Award for the series.

“Treehouse of Horror XXI:”
Inspired by the Twihard craze this year, The Simpsons take on vampires, but instead of hiring Twilight’s Robert Pattinson to voice the vampire character befriending Lisa, Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe plays the hero/villain in this version.
This year’s “Treehouse of Horror” poster art also won a PromaxBDA Award for illustration for print, depicting Bart and Millhouse in a Jumanji-like debacle and Homer and Marge trying to take out a supposed evildoer in the form of Hugh Laurie.

“Treehouse of Horror XXIV” Couch Gag:
Guillermo del Toro was brought on to create 2013’s couch gag for the episode, who was inspired by many past horror films and thrillers including Pan’s Labyrinth, Night of the Living Dead, The Birds, The Shining, Hellboy, Frankenstein and The Wolf Man. Horror writers and filmmakers also appear, including Alfred Hitchcock, Stephen King, Edgar Allen Poe and H.P. Lovecraft.
“Treehouse of Horror XXV:”
And last but certainly not least, below is the promo for this Sunday’s iteration of “Treehouse of Horror,” in which Bart is very excited to be going to hell.
