Shark Week is taking full advantage of the Fourth of July holiday this year for a week worthy of its “findependence.”

The first promo for this year’s event highlighted the summer holiday, incorporating a well-known song to make Shark Week “the most wonderful week of the year.”

But before we all sit back and take in some enlightening, terrifying and fascinating shark-related programming, let’s take a look at some past Shark Weeks (and some of its distant cousins).

Last year’s Shark Week campaign starred Rob Lowe as the King of Summer, surfing on a pair of sharks as seals and mermaids swam nearby.

The year before that focused on the unlikely hero Snuffy the Seal, who inspired the Shark Week tagline, “It’s a bad week to be a seal.”

There’s also SharkFest, Nat Geo WILD’s take on the shark event. This year, the network created a very tongue-in-cheek promo with comedian Rory Scovel to describe its unoriginal idea (that viewers should still love).

Last year’s campaign adapted some of that same humor for a very literal theme song for sharks:

WE tv introduced its own version of the event, dubbing it Snark Week, turning the tables on the sharks bit in the teaser below:

Syfy kicked off Sharknado Week last year in honor of the sequel to its social media hit Sharknado.

Let’s just hope this is only the beginning to Shark Weeks everywhere.
