The Golden Globes, handed out every year by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), will be held this Sunday, Jan. 10, and as has been the organization’s wont over the past several years, again some of TV’s edgiest fare is on display.
Last year, Amazon won its first major awards for its original comedy, Transparent (pictured above), with Jeffrey Tambor named best actor in a comedy and the series taking home the comedy trophy.
Transparent is again nominated this year, as well as three other shows from streaming services: Hulu’s Casual, which marks the first major award nomination for Hulu; Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle and Netflix’s Orange is the New Black. HBO’s Silicon Valley is the only non-streaming show to be nommed, and the HFPA left out (or snubbed, as they say) perennial Emmy favorites HBO’s Veep and ABC’s Modern Family.
Here’s a look at the series that preceded Transparent to the podium in advance of this weekend’s awards gala, hosted by Ricky Gervais:
2014: Fox’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine
This award seemed to herald the Andy Samberg-starrer as broadcast’s new it comedy. That didn’t really pan out but the show has turned into a solid performer for Fox. This January, it joins Fox’s Tuesday night comedy line-up at 9 pm, which includes New Girl at 8 pm, Grandfathered at 8:30 pm and The Grinder at 9:30 pm.
2013: HBO’s Girls
Returns for season 5 on Feb. 21.
2012: ABC’s Modern Family
The five-time Emmy winner took home the Golden Globe as well for its second season, after being beaten by Fox’s Glee in both shows’ first seasons.
Who do you think should win the Golden Globe for outstanding comedy series in 2016?
