“It’s been a long time coming,” Taylor Swift says in the trailer for Miss Americana, a behind-the-scenes exploration of the artist’s one-year hiatus from entertainment.

The film, from Emmy-winning director Lana Wilson, chronicles Swift’s newfound political voice despite criticism, fears and insecurities throughout her career. The trailer offers a glimpse of that journey, including archival footage, live performance clips, and the making of hit singles like “Me,” a collaboration with Brendon Urie.

“I became the person everyone wanted me to be,” Swift reflects at one point in the trailer. “I had to deconstruct an entire belief system, toss it out and reject it.”

Miss Americana premieres Jan. 31 on Netflix and in select theaters.
