In a recent interview with Fast Company, Bill McGoldrick, Syfy’s EVP of original programming, pointed to space as the channel’s next frontier. The newly released teaser trailer for its new project, “Ascension,” makes that goal a bit clearer.

The tease, above, illustrates the world in 1963 when the U.S. went into space, moving forward 50 years aboard the starship Ascension, where not much has changed since the ‘60s. Syfy’s six-hour event series, coming this November, tells the story of a covert mission to space that was launched by the U.S. government in 1963. The plan was to send hundreds of people for a 100-year journey. But 50 years into it, a murder makes people start second-guessing the real mission of the starship Ascension.

The tease dates today’s date as November 2014, but everything from clothes to TV to decor points to 1963, the year they set off on the voyage “to save humanity.”
