After eight seasons of playing Jack Bauer on Fox’s 24, Keifer Sutherland is set to return to broadcast television with ABC’s Designated Survivor.

The show — which ABC picked up in a straight-to-series order, according to Variety — tells the story of a lower-level cabinet member who ends up having to become president after a major disaster hits Washington.

Also cast in the series are House’s Kal Penn, who left that show to work in the actual White House in the Obama administration, and Nikita’s Maggie Q. Also starring are Californication’s Natascha McElhone and Italia Ricci.

Designated Survivor is produced by the Mark Gordon Company and ABC Studios. David Guggenheim is the creator and executive producer, along with Simon Kinberg, who worked with Guggenheim to develop the show. Mark Gordon, Nick Pepper, Suzan Bymel, Aditya Sood and Sutherland are also executive producers. Paul McGuigan directed the pilot.

Meanwhile, Fox is going forward with its reboot of the 24 franchise, with 24: Legacy next up, starring Straight Outta Compton‘s Corey Hawkins. Sutherland won’t appear on camera but he’s signed on as an executive producer.
