BritBox’s three-part drama Stonehouse is based on the rise and fall of MP John Stonehouse (Emmy winner Succession’s Matthew Macfadyen), whose seemingly perfect life spiraled out of control in the early 1970s amid rumors of fraud and espionage.
While Stonehouse had been climbing the political ladder, he also forged secret relationships – both with his secretary Sheila Buckley (Emer Heatley) and shadowy figures in Prague—that ultimately threaten him personally and professionally.
With suspicion from his wife, Barbara Stonehouse (BAFTA-nominee Keeley Hawes), and the media growing, Stonehouse flees, pursuing an outlandish escape plan that leads him to Miami, Melbourne and eventually—hand-in-hand with Sheila—the dock of London’s highest criminal court.
All this, while Prime Minister Harold Wilson’s (Kevin R. McNally) slender lead hangs in the balance.
Stonehouse is executive produced by Jon S. Baird, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, Macfadyen, John Preston and Ellie Wood, Polly Hill for ITV and Diederick Santer for BritBox International. It’s directed by Baird and written by Preston.
Stonehouse starts streaming on BritBox Tuesday, January 17, 2023.
