State of Design at PromaxBDA: The Conference each year curates and gathers some of the best in design from everywhere – some examples are from the TV industry, but most are not.

Taking inspiration from retailers, music videos, holiday ads, main titles and animated shorts, Stash Media’s Stephen Price presented the 2015 State of Design. With a theme of designing with emotion, Price presents the list below.

First up, videos that are all “anchored in authentic emotion.”

John Lewis “Monty’s Christmas”

Animation Montage For “Stickboy”

These emotions, says Price, are universally recognized by all ages.

Freeview “Left Behinds”

The common knowledge of this spot is what makes it work, he says, from familiar toys to popular ballads. “Strong comedy relies on broad spectrum of emotion.”

And a strange thing happens when you inject authentic emotion into that work—suddenly it’s got attitude.

Adidas “There Will Be Haters”

PromaxBDA Africa “Evolution: The Future Is Now

Emotions connect better than ideas, says Price, “because our ancestors who stopped to explain why everybody should be running away are gone from our gene pool.”

The best spots show a wide range of emotions:

Cartoon Network “The Amazing World Of Gumball” Loops

“A Tale Of Momentum & Inertia”

There is a lot of fun to be had by exploring the emotions that are underserved or completely ignored by mainstream media.

“They can be powerful if you combine them with a sense of humor and maybe a touch of insanity.”

The Brothers McLeod “Consequences#2”

“Tofu Hunter”

These next spots are examples of how to present emotion with no dialogue at all.

Victor Caire “Pinnipedes”

“Jinxy Jenkins, Lucky Lou”

Price’s site, Stash, typically runs design work, design news and great examples of creativity across every medium. But this spot below is the first and only company reel he has ever run.

And now for the third annual State of Design Awards.

This year’s Best Performance Period goes to Patrick Clair. Check out two examples of his recent work below:

“Man In The High Castle” Titles
