This explains why Ian McShane only had time to do one episode of Game of Thrones.
McShane plays a mysterious (probably less mysterious to book readers) figure known as Mr. Wednesday in Starz’ upcoming American Gods, based on the best-seller by Neil Gaiman.
The series tells of a war brewing between old and new gods: the traditional gods of mythological roots from around the world who are steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs. The show’s protagonist, Shadow Moon, is an ex-con who after the supposed death of his wife is recruited to become a bodyguard and traveling partner to Mr. Wednesday. Wednesday appears in the world as a conman but in reality is one of the older gods, who is gathering his forces.
Coming in 2017, the series also stars Ricky Whittle as Shadow Moon, Pablo Schreiber as Mad Sweeney, Yetide Badaki as Bilquis and Bruce Langley as Technical Boy. At San Diego Comic-Con, Starz announced that Broadway star Kristin Chenoweth was joining the cast in the role or Easter, formerly known as Ostara, the goddess of spring. Bryan Fuller and Michael Green are showrunners and writers, while David Slade is director and executive producer and Gaiman is on board as executive producer.
