Get your Sharknado t-shirt and pjs, and prepare for everything shark.
“Sharknado” wasn’t just a social media hit last summer, it also quickly spawned shark-related imposters and merchandising efforts from Syfy and elsewhere.

Following its debut in the U.S. July 30, “Sharknado 2” has plans to air in 86 countries around the world within 24 hours. So now that “Sharknado 2: The Second One” is almost upon us, Syfy has decided to ramp up its merchandising surrounding the sequel in an effort to more thoroughly own the market that it hopes will respond to the franchise once again.
Teaming up with New York agency Earthbound, which has signed on 45 merchandising partners and 1,000 retail outlets worldwide, Syfy wants to expand the brand past T-shirts in a new retail sweep that will include jewelry, towels, backpacks, mobile accessories, shot glasses, slot machines and Halloween costumes. Syfy-branded retail items will be available in stores including Hot Topic, Kmart and Walmart.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the best-selling pieces so far have been beach towels, boys’ PJs and the Pop! Vinyl figures shown above.
“It’s by far the most popular merchandise I have ever licensed for Syfy,” said Syfy Ventures VP Jeff Li. “Nothing comes close. The scary thing is it’s just getting started.”
