Add ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ to the list of shows that are bowing online ahead of their broadcast premieres.
But this time, there’s a twist.
Logo announced Thursday that the sixth season of its breakout hit drag queen reality competition will premiere exclusively in the new Logo TV app on February 17, one week before the February 24 broadcast premiere.
But viewers who watch the season premiere in the app won’t get to hear Ru order one queen to “sashay away;” Logo is keeping the elimination scene solely for the broadcast premiere.
Logo executives are hoping the suspense will drive fans onto social media platforms in the week between premieres to generate buzz and boost tune-in and ratings.
The Viacom-owned cabler is also hoping that the “Drag Race” premiere is just the right shiny object to attract downloads for the new video-heavy app, which will feature LGBT-themed films, authenticated access to Logo shows, and integrated Second Screen experiences.

Brief Take: “RuPaul’s Drag Race” has proven to be one of the bright spots for struggling Logo, and it’s creative twist on the season premiere could generate enough interest in their TV Everywhere app to encourage discovery of other offerings.
