Rick and Morty teamed up with Old Spice for a branded content spot that’s as wacky as the show itself, and shocked fans by killing off an obscure side character.

The 30-second sponsored video shows alcoholic mad scientist Rick routinely barging in on a sleepy Morty, this time with life-sized cans of Old Spice’s Invisible Sprays, as he fumbles through the ad copy in his hands and the cans wreck havoc on Marty’s bedroom.

At one point in the chaos, a can pulls Butter Bot out of a desk drawer and they toss the droid around a bit before devouring it. The spot ends with Rick counting up his cash.

The partnership comes as broadcaster Adult Swim looks to monetise the series, according to The Drum. And like many things in Rick and Morty, the death of Butter Bot is a critique on society, symbolizing the profits and losses of capitalism.

Fans were first introduced to Butter Bot in season two, when Rick creates the tiny robot while eating pancakes.

“What is my purpose?” the robot asks.

“You pass butter,” Rick responds. The robot enters a state of despair, contemplating his meaningless existence as he stares blankly at his hands: “Oh my god.”

“Welcome to the club, pal,” says Rick.

The scene sparked a number of fan spinoffs, including a real-life functioning 120-pound flamethrower version of the robot—who appears to have met his demise in the belly of corporate greed.

The branded spot comes after a recent exchange with McDonald’s in which the fast food restaurant was inspired by the show to bring back it’s Szechuan sauce from 1998.

Rick and Morty also ran a sponsored ad back in 2015 when it teamed up with Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s.
