The CW Kicks off Fall TV at PaleyFest

Saturday, Sept. 6, new superhero series, The Flash, and telenovela-inspired drama, Jane the Virgin, debuted at PaleyFest 2014. After screening both pilots, cast and crew from both new shows took the stage to discuss what made The Flash so exciting and Jane the Virgin so different.

Show creators described Jane the Virgin as an over-the-top, but still humble, fairy tale, while The Flash is The CW’s Arrow spinoff comics fans have been waiting for all summer, bringing Barry Allen to life, from dark origin story to new-found powers, with some relationship trouble along the way.

CBS Promotes New ‘Funcedural Scorpion at PaleyFest

CBS touts its new series Scorpion as a “funcedural,” which also happens to be partly inspired by real life.

Walter O’Brien (the fourth smartest person in the world and an executive producer on the show about his exploits) and his team end up working with the government on a series of cases. The show aims to go part-procedural with a beginning, middle and end to each episode, while also delving more into the lives of his band of misfits.

Fox’s Mulaney and Red Band Society Rise to the Occasion at PaleyFest

The SNL writer and standup comic John Mulaney took the stage for his self-titled TV show, Mulaney, along with Fox’s hospital drama, Red Band Society, on Monday, spanning two very different worlds for the network.

Mulaney also stars Martin Short, and Mulaney says it’s inspired by well-known sitcoms like The Cosby Show, Golden Girls, I Love Lucy and Sergeant Bilko. Red Band Society aimed to focus on the show’s younger stars, a group of patients at a hospital, trying to navigate friendship and romance amidst diagnoses and treatments.

NBC Asks Viewers to Commit to Marry Me with Paleyfest Screening

Ken Marino and Casey Wilson of Marry Me touted the new relationship drama Wednesday, which Wilson described as “funny and relatable.”

NBC pitched the series as an ensemble comedy that just happened to have a relationship at the heart of the story that “cuts saccharine sweetness with pretty subversive jokes at times,” according to Marino.

‘Cristela’ and ‘Black-ish’ Explore Family and Identity at PaleyFest

ABC took the opportunity as the last broadcast presentation of PaleyFest to cover two new series that explore what the American Dream means to modern families today. Cristela and Black-ish, both new comedies for the network, feature three generations of families dealing with identity crises.

Based loosely on Cristela Alonzo’s real life, Cristela follows a law student trying to make something of herself while living with her overbearing family, as the devoted father in Black-ish tries to figure out why being black doesn’t mean the same thing to his kids as it does to him.
