With no DIRECTV media deal expected to be completed in 2013-2014, Pac-12 Networks has refocused its energies on encouraging its fans to simply drop the satellite distributor for a service with whom the college sports channels do have a deal.

On Monday, with 17 days to go until its first college football telecast of the season, Pac-12 Networks launched the “Compare” campaign across print, digital, billboard, radio and TV. The campaign pits placid documentary footage of real-life animals against the explosive sports action of their college football counterparts. Naturally, the campaign posits that the animal footage, such as a clip featuring ducks in a pond, is available on DIRECTV, while the football footage, such as a clip showing the Oregon Ducks football team driving into the end zone, is not. A promo for each Pac-12 university begins by asking a school’s respective fans, “Have you switched?” and concludes with the words, “Drop DIRECTV, and get Pac-12 Networks today.”

Pac-12 Networks even offers a switch page where it makes the transition to a new cable service as easy for the fan-in-need as possible.

For its part, DIRECTV has said it wants Pac-12 Networks to be available to its subscribers but that the PAc-12 has yet to propose a fair deal.

Brief Take: “Compare” is a clear and simple way for the Pac-12 to show those fans what they are missing without a DirecTV deal in place and rally them to go after it.
