South Korean director Bong Joon Ho made history at the 92nd annual Academy Awards with the movie, which won best picture and best international feature film, as well as best director and original screenplay for Bong. It was the first time that a foreign-language film won best picture (French film The Artist, which was named best picture in 2012, does not count because it was silent and thus considered language-agnostic) and the first time a South Korean film had won in the best foreign-language (now international feature) category.
Parasite also won the Golden Globe for best foreign-language film, the SAG Award for best ensemble and the Palme D’Or, which is top prize at the Cannes International Film Festival. Parasite’s Oscar win also marked the first time since Marty in 1955 that a film went from winning the Palme d’Or to winning the Oscar.
