HBO digs into the origins of Perry Mason in its new series premiering Sunday, June 21.

The drama, set in Depression-era Los Angeles in 1931, stars Matthew Rhys (The Americans) as the private investigator who later becomes American fiction’s most preeminent criminal defense attorney. As Mason is called upon to investigate what turns out to be the case of the decade, he also struggles with his own demons.

Besides Rhys in the title role, Perry Mason stars John Lithgow (The Crown), Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), Juliet Rylance (The Knick), Chris Chalk, Shea Whigham, Stephen Root (Barry), Gayle Rankin, Nate Corddry, Veronica Falcon, Jefferson Mays, Lili Taylor, Andrew Howard, Eric Lange, and Robert Patrick.

It’s executive produced by Amanda Burrell, Robert Downey Jr., Susan Downey, Ron Fitzgerald, Joe Horacek, Rolin Jones and Timothy Van Patten (who also directs. It’s co-executive produced by Aida Rodgers and produced by Rhys. Rolin Jones and Ron Fitzgerald created the series based on the characters originated by Erle Stanley Gardner.
