Since Angela Guice founded Los Angeles-based NuContext in 2006, the creative agency and production company has partnered with such major media players as The Walt Disney Company, Netflix, Hulu, WarnerMedia, ViacomCBS, NBCUniversal and more.

“If you had told me in 2006 when we were just starting out that we would be collaborating on campaigns for Fortune 500 brands, producing music videos alongside major artists like Foo Fighters and Lizzo, and that I would one day be directing Steven Spielberg, those are just a few of the many unforgettable moments that I could never have even imagined,” said NuContext’s founder and executive producer in a statement.

Since then, NuContext has earned numerous accolades for its work on top show launches, branded content and 360-degree marketing campaigns, winning awards from Promax, the Tellys, the Addys and more.

One major highlight for the company was winning an Emmy for outstanding promo/brand image for Dreamworks’ She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. “This was a very special win for us as a female-owned business with a commitment to empowering the next generation of diverse and powerful young people,” said Guice.

That commitment to diversity, inclusion and empowerment is central to Guice’s philosophy and to the way she leads the agency. In 2017, NuContext began hosting the “Women On Top” series of networking events for women who work in entertainment marketing, and has plans to resume hosting once COVID restrictions have lifted.

“To see other female entrepreneurs now thriving, and more women than ever in top executive positions, it’s clear that when we support each other there is no limit to what is possible, said Guice”

In February 2021, NuContext and Guice launched the HBCU-to-Hollywood Scholarship + Internship Program. Inspired by Guice’s 2019 work with HBCU (historically Black colleges and universities) Southern University in Baton Rouge, La., when it worked with pop star Lizzo to film a new music video. It was Lizzo’s vision to celebrate HBCU marching band culture and the joy of homecoming.

Once the NuContext crew and director Alan Ferguson landed in Louisiana, it was clear that Southern University was a special place full of creativity with some very talented students. The new internship includes a $5,000 scholarship to cover travel, living expenses and continuing education for a six to eight week internship opportunity in Hollywood with NuContext. Southern University college student Chaselynn Grant is the first recipient of the NuContext HBCU-to- Hollywood program and will be joining NuContext in Hollywood this summer.

Guice also highlights NuContext’s relationship with Disney, who has been client since the agency’s launch.

“We were incredibly honored that TWDC nominated NuContext as Diverse Supplier of the Year for the 2018 Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) West awards,” said Guice. “We’re very grateful for their longstanding and steadfast support of a female-owned business and for continually being a leader in our industry for diversity and representation in front and behind the camera.”

But Guice and NuContext haven’t been limited to playing in the world of film and television, producing music videos for Lizzo, Blink-182 and the Foo Fighters. NuContext also has produced campaigns for Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Nelly, RZA, Big Freedia and Janelle Monáe.

“I’m truly humbled and forever grateful to have reached this milestone—having survived the ups and downs of our ever-evolving industry, the Great Recession and now a global pandemic,” Guice said. “Being an entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart, but thanks to our NuContext team, our crew family and our all our amazing clients that over the years become like family—this is truly the best job I’ll ever have. Thank you to our team and clients—past and present—for believing in NuContext and giving us the ride of our life. I’m looking forward to the next fifteen.”
