Netflix has ousted Showtime as the first TV outlet to get sought-after Weinstein Co. films.
The Weinstein Company and Netflix announced their new, multi-year deal today that makes Netflix the first TV outlet from Weinstein and its Dimension Films. The deal doesn’t go into effect until 2016, but it will allow Netflix to own the pay TV window for all Weinstein and Dimension Films releases, effectively taking it away from the current holder, Showtime.
Netflix already has many Weinstein options in its instant streaming library, including Oscar winners “The Artist” and “Undefeated.” The company also made a similar deal last year, when it outbid Starz for Disney live-action and animated features.
