In the wake of Queen Elizabeth II’s death on September 8, Netflix saw its critically acclaimed series, The Crown, return to the top of the streaming charts. Production on season six was paused after the long-reigning monarch’s passing, but the streamer announced that season five of the series would return November 9 over the weekend at its second annual virtual global fan event, Netflix Tudum.
This season will mark the third passing of the torch to a new set of actors, with Imelda Staunton taking over as Queen Elizabeth from Claire Foy and Olivia Colman, both of whom won Emmys for the role. Jonathan Pryce will play Prince Phillip, who has been previously played by Matt Smith (House of the Dragon, Doctor Who) and Emmy-winner Tobias Menzies (Game of Thrones, Outlander). Dominic West (The Wire, The Affair) takes over as Prince Charles from Emmy-winner Josh Charles, while Elizabeth Debicki will portray Princess Diana, assuming the role from Emma Corrin.
Season five is said to end with the death and aftermath of Diana and her consort, Dodi Fayed, who died in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997.
The streamer announced a slew of other series, both new and returning, as well as films and even video games at the global event, which included separate sessions focusing on Japan, Korea, India and Latin America
