Only last Thursday, NBC’s “Sound of Music Live!” earned the broadcaster more than 18 million viewers, and already executives are brainstorming next year’s event.
Encouraged by high ratings in the holiday season, NBC plans on keeping up the tradition and airing a live musical event for the 2014 season. According to The New York Times, NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt and “Sound of Music” executive producers Neil Meron and Craig Zadan are trying to narrow it down to another family friendly musical to appeal to the same viewers.
Greenblatt also said that musical rights holders are eager for NBC to air their musical, meaning this could become an annual NBC tradition, complete with recognizable star and familiar songs.
Vulture and Entertainment Weekly have even recommended a few good musicals just itching to air on TV - “Wicked” or Beyonce’s “Cinderella,” anyone?

Brief Take: Touting high ratings and extensive social media interactions, NBC is creating an annual holiday event space with the live musical as well as its a cappella competition “The Sing Off.” As it builds up its programming in this space, the broadcaster could manage to score viewers during the months where network series go on hiatus and other shows expect lower numbers.
