On Sunday night, MTV’s focus was on the star-studded VMAs, an awards show that attracts buzz and takes over social channels for the evening each year. But the cable net also used the night to introduce viewers to its new and returning shows that will fill the airwaves after Ariana Grande, Beyonce and crew take off.

First there is the new series Happyland, a “soapy teen dramedy,” according to MTV, debuting Sept. 30. The series follows a teenage employee at a theme park whose cynical nature differs from the park’s idealistic goals: “45 minutes as a princess and I wanted to slit my own throat with a tiara.” The promo (above) called “Dreams Can Come True” takes a look behind the scenes at Happyland, where characters misbehave and anger sometimes overrides false smiles.

One of MTV’s breakout hits, Awkward, returns Sept. 23 in the middle of season four with some questions to answer: Hookups or breakups? Successes or failures? Coming clean or getting dirty? This fall, the show is back to make things a little more complicated and way more awkward, even coining signature catchphrases as it tends to do: “YOGO. You only graduate once.”

Not only utilizing VMA night, but also the musical talents of Paula Abdul, Faking It’s promo, entitled “Straight Up,” uses a series of stills to tell the story up until now in the show. It also returns Tuesday, Sept. 23, Faking It tells the story of two friends who tell a white lie that turns into a big mess. After a group of high school friends assume they’re lesbians, the friends go along with it, only to find out they feel very differently about each other than they once thought.

And on the unscripted front, Slednecks will try to prove how fun it is in Alaska, complete with wildlife, winter sports and.. nude snowboarding? The reality series premieres on MTV Oct. 30.
