Last year’s event was the most social event of the summer, according to Nielsen data, and MTV wants to make sure the 2015 VMAs top that come Sunday night.

MTV’s 2015 Video Music Awards show is bringing yet another digital element to the night’s proceedings, now with a 360-degree virtual reality experience for the red carpet.

The VMA pre-show, starting at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 30, will feature a live virtual reality viewing experience for fans to follow along on MTV’s All Access Live platform. With this, MTV will become one of the first networks to use VR technology for an awards show.

“Virtual reality is changing the way people see the world and we’re excited to bring this innovative storytelling tool onto the VMA red carpet ahead of this year’s show,” said Colin Helms, SVP of MTV Connected Content. “We’re excited to build on MTV’s long-standing history of digital innovation as one of the first networks to ever fully integrate a live virtual reality experience to give viewers a carpet-side seat.”

The VR experience was created in partnership with IM360, a VR studio that also transmits feeds via its app. VMA viewers can access the app or MTV’s All Access Live to navigate the red carpet by using their cursor or moving their mobile device to view different angles.

MTV is also leveraging its social influencer base, creating more experiences and opportunities for them to post content on Snapchat, Tumblr, Facebook, Instagram, Vine, Twitter and MTV platforms.

Baddie Winkle, Connor Franta, Lohanthony and Laci Green of MTV’s Braless will be posting exclusive content throughout the pre-show and the awards show Sunday night. Online clothing store Shop Jeen will also take over MTV Style’s Periscope for the night for real-time commentary on red carpet looks.

MTV’s interactive green screen campaign kicked off the very social and digital event this year, providing online users green screen promos and encouraging them to make them their own, resulting in Miley Cyrus riding a kitten and posing against crazy backgrounds.
