Chad Hurley and Steve Chen co-founded a little website you might have heard of called YouTube. Now the digital pioneers are taking on Vine and Instagram with a new application called MixBit.
MixBit’s angle on the instant video-sharing movement is enhanced editing capabilities, a feature so far either nonexistent (Vine) or extremely limited (Instagram) on the other major services. Users of MixBit can alter their own videos with fun, intuitive editing software or remix already existing videos from other users. Hypothetically, a MixBit user could play with the app all day without ever creating a single frame of original video.
MixBit’s goal is to create a “community of creators,” according to the company’s website, which goes on to say: “We think video should be a living, breathing entity and that creativity is a collaborative process. More than simply capturing brief moments in time, we help people bring stories to life.

Brief Take: The collaborative feature of MixBit is a fascinating new twist for marketers. Companies can now quickly and easily engage with MixBit users by encouraging them to edit branded footage into something wondrous and sharable. A new era of crowdsourcing may be upon us.
