Melissa Grego has been named to the newly-created position of chief executive officer of HRTS, becoming the first woman to lead the organization in its 70-year history, said HRTS President Eric Schrier, president, original programming, FX Networks and FX Productions.

Grego, formerly editor-in-chief of Broadcasting & Cable, succeeds longtime HRTS Executive Director Dave Ferrara, who is retiring. Grego assumes her new post on Oct. 30.

“With Melissa’s background as a journalist and successful entrepreneur, she has a comprehensive understanding of the current television and media business,” said Schrier in a statement. “The energy and expertise she brings to the role will elevate the organization, particularly as it evolves and adapts to the changes in the multiplatform TV landscape and the issues that are critical to our members.

“Finally, we are grateful to Dave Ferrara for his dedicated service over the past 18 years. Under his leadership, the HRTS has experienced tremendous success and growth and he will always hold a special place with the organization.”

Grego joins HRTS from her consulting practice Melinc, which specializes in conferences, editorial content strategy and individual advisory work and where she is known as an advocate for equality and inclusion in TV and media. Through Melinc., Grego works with B&C parent company New Bay Media to produce conferences, such as the Next TV Summit, the TV Data Summit and Keynotes and Cocktails: Women of the West and Women of NY.

“In my experience covering and working in this space, I have been fortunate to develop a broad view of the business and great insight into the challenges of thriving in TV and media. It is an honor and privilege to apply this perspective to HRTS,” said Grego, also in a statement.

Prior to serving as editor-in-chief of B&C, she held positions at Variety, The Hollywood Reporter and Television Week.
