Mark Ruffalo stars as twins in HBO’s new limited series, I Know This Much Is True, based on the best-selling novel by Wally Lamb.
The trick is that Ruffalo plays both Dominick and Thomas Birdsey, and had to gain 30 pounds to play the heavier twin.
The series is set in the fictional town of Three Rivers, Connecticut. It accompanies Dominick and Thomas through different stages in their lives, beginning in their present in the early 1990s with both brothers approaching middle-age, interspersed with Dominick’s flashbacks to their young adulthood and childhood.
Besides Ruffalo, who also executive produces, the series stars Melissa Leo, Rosie O’Donnell, Archie Panjabi, Imogen Poots, John Pracaccino, Rob Huebel, Philip Ettinger, Aisling Franciosi, Michael Greyeyes, Guillermo Diaz, Marcello Fonte, Bruce Greenwood, Brian Goodman, Juliette Lewis and Kathryn Hahn.
The series is executive produced by Ruffalo and Derek Cianfrance, who also wrote and directed. Also executive producing on the series are Ben Browning, Glen Basner, Gregg Fienberg, Lynette Howell Taylor, author Lamb and Anya Epstein. Jamie Patricof co-executive produces.
The six-part limited series premieres April 27 on HBO.
