Without the breakout hit True Detective or the final season of Breaking Bad to contend with, this year’s Emmys are infinitely more uncertain than the last.
Which means this year’s “for your consideration” campaigns are much more crowded than last year’s as well.
Added to that, digital-only series have erupted, with Netflix adding several shows onto its lineup (House of Cards and Orange is the New Black being joined by Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Bloodline and Grace and Frankie). Amazon hopes to build on its Transparent Golden Globe win, and Yahoo has been vocal about wanting to push its newly acquired Community to Emmy voters.
Voting concludes in June and the nominations come this July, so networks and digital outlets have little time to campaign for their favorite shows.
AMC just finished off a successful season of its Breaking Bad spinoff, Better Call Saul, and other cable networks hope to gain some Emmy love for recent seasons as well, such as Starz’s Outlander, Cinemax’s The Knick, and a few more far-off series like Showtime’s The Affair and WGN America’s Manhattan.
Broadcast nets, on the other hand, are looking to build momentum off of diverse hits like the Golden Globe-winning Jane the Virgin on The CW. Fox’s Last Man on Earth and ABC’s TGIT drama How to Get Away with Murder are also keeping fingers crossed for statues this year.
The drama field is a little more open this year, with Breaking Bad and True Detective out of the way, although there are the final episodes of Mad Men to contend with. Without clear front-runners in the competition, shows such as Game of Thrones, Empire and Masters of Sex face a better chance of getting onstage.
The 67th Primetime Emmy Awards will air Sunday, Sept. 20 on Fox.

Brief Take: These shows are doing just about anything to be seen before Emmy voting ends. Netflix’s Daredevil is launching a traveling exhibit for its costumes, Bravo promoted both Top Chef and Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce at a special panel event, and Sony is giving away free downloads of ‘80s songs to promote The Goldbergs. And the season has only begun.
