Laura Dern stars as Jennifer Fox, a documentary filmmaker who digs into her own sexual abuse, in HBO’s upcoming original film The Tale.

Coming off a strong showing at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, the movie follows Jennifer as she’s compelled to re-examine her past and her first sexual relationship that she had at 13, after her mother uncovers one of her childhood stories.

Through an adult understanding and childhood flashbacks, the film explores contradictory perspectives and the power of memories. It focuses on how Jennifer’s horseback riding instructor (Elizabeth Debicki) and running coach (Jason Ritter) conspired to take her virginity through a relationship that she remembers as beautiful and special.
