Jon Stewart is giving up the anchor chair on The Daily Show after skewering the news since 1999.

Stewart broke the news to his studio audience while taping Tuesday’s show in New York City:

No reason has been publicly given for the move.

Comedy Central President Michele Ganeless said in a statement:

“For the better part of the last two decades, I have had the incredible honor and privilege of working with Jon Stewart. His comedic brilliance is second to none. Jon has been at the heart of Comedy Central, championing and nurturing the best talent in the industry, in front of and behind the camera. Through his unique voice and vision, The Daily Show has become a cultural touchstone for millions of fans and an unparalleled platform for political comedy that will endure for years to come. He is a comic genius, generous with his time and talent, and will always be a part of the Comedy Central family.”

Stewart has won 19 Emmy Awards since taking over hosting duties from Craig Kilborne.

His departure comes on the heels of Stephen Colbert’s move from his post-Daily Show perch hosting The Colbert Report for late night duties at CBS, where he will replace David Letterman on The Late Show. Colbert’s Late Show premieres September 8.

Colbert’s show was replaced by Larry Wilmore’s The Nightly Show, which premiered last month.
