Leading up to this year’s Station Summit, we are taking a look at the speakers, sessions and panels that make the event memorable. Rick Lewchuk, SVP of creative services at CNN Worldwide, speaks about his upcoming session, his career and his advice to industry up-and-comers. Don’t miss Lewchuk’s session at this year’s Summit: “Making the News: The 10 Commandments of Marketing and Managing Your Biggest Asset.”
Name: Rick Lewchuk
Title: SVP, Creative Services, CNN Worldwide
Could you summarize your session in 5 words? 10 ideas for promoting news.
How do you watch television content? On the biggest, best screen available. Why watch on an iPad when there is a 50” HD screen in the room?
What do you think is the most important trait of a leader? Umm… LEADING. People want to know there is someone taking them in a specific direction.
What is your greatest career achievement so far? 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Promoting five networks, in two languages, live, 24 hours a day for 16 days. And every promo was integrated into programming instead of running in commercial breaks. Broke every rating record for television in Canada.
What one piece of advice would you give to an up-and-comer in this industry? Same advice my Dad gave me before Nike came up with the slogan. JUST DO IT. In the time it takes to complain about a task, you can have it done. You are noticed if you show the ability to get the job done without the drama.
How did you get your start in this industry? By volunteering to run camera for my college basketball broadcasts and local cable TV community programming. That led to a part-time job doing studio camera for a station newscast.
