Fred Armisen and Bill Hader’s Documentary Now! is a series of fake stories being told through the lens of serious documentary films. Even better, the show itself Documentary Now! is presented as a series (or an “American television institution,” according to Helen Mirren) that has been around for 50 years, when in fact this is its TV debut.

In the teaser above, Mirren declares she’s proud to be a part of its “50th season,” hosting the latest in a slate of documentaries that rewrite or completely make up history.

The six-episode season includes topics such as journalists investigating drug cartels in Mexico, Iceland’s Al Capone Festival and an exposé on the very first documentary about the Inuit.

Documentary Now!, created by Armisen, Hader and Seth Meyers, premieres on IFC Thursday, Aug. 20.
