Hulu released a chilling trailer of its upcoming original series The Handmaid’s Tale.
In a new extended clip, we are introduced to Offred (Mad Men’s Elisabeth Moss), who ends up in a class called handmaids, women whose singular role in society is to reproduce. The clip shows the rise of the Republic of Gilead and its brutal oppression of women.
“We were asleep before, that’s how it happened,” Offred says at the start of the trailer. She later mentions how society did not wise up, which ushered in a religious, oppressive regime. In the clip, armed men patrol the streets and laws are enacted to limit the rights of women. Offred is captured and forced into her new role as handmaid, bearing children for the society’s childless elite class.
The 10-episode drama is an adaptation based on the 1985 Margaret Atwood novel of the same name, and also stars Joseph Fiennes (Camelot) and Yvonne Strahovski (Chuck) as The Commander and his sterile wife, for whom Offred is assigned to bear a child. Also included are Ann Dowd, Madeline Brewer and Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls).
The Handmaid’s Tale is created, executive produced and written by Bruce Miller and comes to Hulu from MGM Television. Executive produced by Warren Littlefield, Daniel Wilson and Fran Sears, and Ilene Chaiken.
The series will premiere Wednesday, April 26, on Hulu.
