Eleven years ago, Eric McCormack turned down the role of Will, Sean Hayes told show creator Max Mutchnick to “stop looking at his ass” on the way out of a reading and they knew he was perfect as Jack, Megan Mullally originally auditioned for Grace but made a much better Karen, and Debra Messing charmed everyone with her laugh.

In the featurette “Will & Grace: Journey to Now,” NBC takes a look back at the development of the series as the network prepares for a 10-episode revival that premieres September 28.

Cast and creators weigh in on how they got their parts, and what to expect for the new season. As Will says to Grace in a clip:

“It will be different this time … because all the other times we’ve done this we thought it would be different, but this time we know, it’s going to be exactly the same.”

The revival follows a successful reunion for a 10-minute scene that ran prior to the 2016 presidential election, where Will and Grace try to convince Karen and Jack not to vote for Donald Trump.
