During World War II, letters meant everything to the families of soldiers, who waited every day for news of them.
Good news came folded in triangles, since there was no paper to waste on envelopes. Square letters meant only one thing: a death notice.
Russia’s TV-3 celebrated the country’s Victory Day, May 9, the day that Nazi Germany capitulated to the Soviet Union, with this wistful spot. It’s accompanied by lyrics written by Marina Tsvetaeva, a poet of the Silver Age of Russian Poetry, and sung by Polina Agureeva, a leading actress of Piotr Fomenko’s experimental theater school.
