Creative agency Mocean teamed up with CNN to help promote the news network’s original series Soundtracks: Songs That Defined History a show about iconic moments in history, the music that defined those moments, and the emotion tied to both.

In the spot, Mocean tied together those three elements by using a record store as a vehicle to tell the history. From the cover sleeves of the album albums to the decades of band stickers layered deep on the bins, different elements in the frame was designed to evoke the emotion of a local record shop.

The tune of Edwin Starr’s “War” plays throughout the clip and animated archival photos on the album covers to hint at the historical topics in the series, such as September 11, Kent State, Moon Landing and the Stonewall Riots. Mocean also used a late-night DJ voice-over to tie it all together.
