Netflix revealed the first teaser for original documentary series Rapture that explores the culture of hip hop through the stories of a diverse swath of artists.
The eight-episode series features 2018 Grammy nominees Rapsody and Logic, along with musicians Nas, Dave East, T.I., G-Eazy, A Boogie wit da Hoodie, 2 Chainz, Just Blaze and more. It dives into their lives with families and friends, from sitting front row in the studio and grinding on tour, to experiencing the power of a moving crowd, according to the streamer.
“Their words … their way,” as the promo puts it.
The series is produced by Mass Appeal, an urban culture content and media collective based in New York.
“Way back, when hip-hop culture was in its gestational phase, the powerful message therein didn’t go much further than the five boroughs of New York City,” said Sacha Jenkins of Mass Appeal, who serves as a director and executive producer, in a statement. “Today, rap music is the heartbeat of Mother Earth, and Netflix is the embodiment of the eyes from which she sees. It is a great honor for Mass Appeal to work with Netflix to produce our new series Rapture. We’ve been telling hip-hop stories since ‘96, and as natives we feel it is our duty to do the movement justice. Rapture is bangin’. Straight up.”
Ben Selkow also executive produces with Peter Bittenbender, Ben Cotner, Zana Lawrence and Lisa Nishimura, and directs alongside Geeta Gandbhir, Steven Caple Jr., Marcus A. Clarke and Gabriel Noble.
Rapture premieres March 30 on Netflix.
