“True Blood,” based on a series by Charlaine Harris, was a defining hit for the vampire/fantasy genre and HBO alike. But alas, all guilty pleasures must come to an end.

HBO has confirmed that “True Blood” will make its seventh season its final season, completing the series with a 10-episode season next summer.

Now about to close out its sixth season, “True Blood” has a socially engaged fanbase that is not slowing down. According to a study by social marketing analysis firm SocialBakers, the show actually grew its fanbase online this summer across the board, now claiming more than 11 million Facebook fans alone. “True Blood” will definitely be leaving on a high note, according to its fans.

HBO’s “Treme” also will end after December, but the network will still have “Game of Thrones,” “Boardwalk Empire” and “The Newsroom,” as well as new projects including a novel adaptation from Damon Lindelof of “Lost” and 1970s music drama from Mick Jagger.

Brief Take: “True Blood” has not only been a hit for the network but also a groundbreaking show in its genre. It marks the end of along-running franchise, a major player in its timeslot and a defining piece of the HBO brand.
