Northern Lights Agency considers what it meant to family and friends to lose loved ones in the above trailer for Max’s four-part docuseries, Last Call: When a Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York.

“Queer bars were one of the few places where we could come and feel safe… And then, all the sudden, everything was taken away,” say two narrators in the trailer.

“My brother, my uncle, my friend, he just … disappeared.”

Last Call is set in the early 1990s and tracks a serial killer who infiltrated queer nightlife to find victims. The docuseries, which plays as an investigative crime story, looks at the prejudices and attitudes of a time when homophobia was prevalent, hate crimes were on the rise and the AIDS crisis was worsening.

Producers dug through archival footage and interviewed activists, investigators and family members to create the series. It also highlights the efforts of activists, including the NYC Anti-Violence Project, to force law enforcement to protect the queer community.

Last Call: When A Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York reveals how the LGBTQ+ community fought to solve the murders and demand fair treatment for queer victims of crime.

The docuseries is based on Elon Green’s book, “Last Call: A True Story of Love, Lust and Murder in Queer New York.”

The series is from executive producers Howard Gertler and Anthony Caronna, who also directs. Other executive producers include Charlize Theron, Liz Garbus, Dan Cogan, Jon Bardin, and Kate Barry, Elon Green, Beth Kono, AJ Dix and Matt Maher. Yusef Alsuhaimi and Grace Fardell produce. Nancy Abranam, Lisa Heller and Tina Nguyen executive produce for HBO. It is a production of Story Syndicate in association with Little Punk.

Last Call debuted Sunday, July 9 on HBO and is available to stream on Max.
