Nominations for the 2018 Golden Globes were announced Monday, and while the drama nods were fairly predictable, comedies were not.

As has been the case for TV awards shows in recent years, streaming services Netflix, Amazon and Hulu cleaned up, as did premium cable, such as HBO, Showtime and Starz. That said, broadcast networks managed to stay in the mix with shows such as NBC’s This Is Us and Will & Grace and ABC’s Black-Ish.

Overall, HBO led all services with 12 total nominations; followed by Netflix with nine; FX with eight; Globes’ host NBC with five, tying Showtime; ABC, Hulu and USA with three each; and AMC, National Geographic, Starz and Sundance TV with one each.

The drama series category was stuffed full of heavyweights with HBO’s Game of Thrones back in the mix for its seven-episode seventh season. Interestingly, none of the cast was nominated for any acting awards. Game of Thrones will face Hulu’s Emmy winner The Handmaid’s Tale, last year’s Globes champ Netflix’s The Crown, Netflix’s popular Stranger Things; and This Is Us.

The comedy category, on the other hand, was full of surprises with HBO’s three-time Emmy winner Veep not nominated in any category, and Amazon’s just-released The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel scoring nominations both as best comedy and best actress for Rachel Brosnahan. Also nominated best comedy were Black-ish, Will & Grace, Netflix’s Master of None and Showtime’s newcomer SMILF.

HBO’s limited series Emmy winner, Big Little Lies, led all TV series nominations with six. Sharing the outstanding limited series or made-for-TV movie with Big Little Lies, which HBO said this week is returning for a second season, is FX’s Fargo and Feud: Bette and Joan; USA’s The Sinner and Sundance’s Top of the Lake: China Girl.

The 2018 Golden Globes air Sunday, Jan. 7, on NBC and will be hosted by Seth Meyers, star of the network’s Late Night with Seth Meyers.
