HBO seems to have announced its launch plan for the highly anticipated standalone streaming service, as of Thursday called HBO Now.
The premium network unveiled plans for the service last October, in order to get HBO content to non-subscribers. Fans of its shows have expressed interest in the past few years in the idea of an alternative to its streaming app, HBO GO, which requires a cable subscription. HBO Now will not require cable authentication when logging in.
The service will reportedly be timed to launch this April with the premiere of Game of Thrones season five, though no specific date has been set yet. It will also arrive in time for this summer’s second season of its acclaimed series True Detective. Priced at $15 per month, HBO enlisted the help of Major League Baseball Advanced Media to design the OTT service.
As for partners for the service, Apple is reportedly already in talks to add HBO Now to its Apple TV lineup, which currently also carries the HBO GO app.
