In celebration of Women’s Equality Day and to launch its new “So She Did” campaign platform, HBO Max on Thursday released a short film celebrating women.
The film features women from across WarnerMedia’s TV platforms, including Gossip Girl’s Jordan Alexander, The Nevers’ Laura Donnelly, Curb Your Enthusiasm’s Susie Essman, Industry’s Myha’la Herrold, Genera+ion’s Martha Plimpton, CNN’s Lisa Ling, Hacks’ Hannah Einbinder, Gossip Girl’s Zion Moreno and Legendary’s Eyricka Lanvin.
“When we were little, they told us we could become anything,” starts off Ling, “ but when we became everything, that was too much for some folks,” continues Lanvin. “When we pushed the boundaries, sometimes the boundaries pushed back.”
“They tell us not to be too emotional, too sexy, too Black, too difficult, too intimidating, too queer, too fearless, just too much. There are rules for how much ‘too’ a woman can be,” the voiceover continues. “But if the alternative to being too much is being less than who we really are, count us out. They told us we could be anything, so we became ourselves.”
In addition to the film and overall campaign, HBO Max is making donations to four nonprofits Girls Write Now, Poderistas (formerly known as ‘She Se Puede’),Women of Color Unite and Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice. The donations are intended to service all sorts of female experiences and backgrounds.
“Our programming has always been at the forefront in celebrating diverse and authentic stories for our audiences that we believe encourage conversation and push culture forward.” said Dana Lichtenstein, vice president, brand marketing at HBO Max and HBO in a statement. “In the spirit of honoring Women’s Equality Day today and every day, we came up with “So She Did,” an initiative that, at its core, is about rule breaking. A platform that is less about what women have in common and more about what happens when we dare to celebrate our unique differences.”
HBO Max is also commemorating women behind the camera with its “So She Did” trays across its home page, series and movies page, documentaries page, comedy page and the HBO Hub.
This curated selection showcases the women behind such series as Lovecraft Country (Misha Green), Summer Camp Island (Julia Pott) and Steven Universe (Rebecca Sugar). Spotlighted films include Bessie (Dee Rees), Red Riding Hood (Catherine Hardwicke), and LFG (Andrea Nix). The comedies page features such titles as Going the Distance (Nanette Burstein) and Insecure (Issa Rae) and the documentaries page spotlights I’ll Be Gone in the Dark (Liz Garbus) and Harlan County USA (Barbara Kopple). Finally, the HBO Hub is home to My Brother Luca (Catalina Serna), Frida (Julie Taymor), and Senseless (Penelope Spheeris).
