If you fell in love with the world of Washington Heights in Lin Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights, then HBO Max’s documentary, Romeo Santos: King of Bachata, and live concert event, Romeo Santos: Utopia Live From MetLife Stadium, is for you.
The documentary traces the ascent of the disenfranchised musical genre from the Dominican Republic to its international recognition that culminates in a record-breaking concert starring Santos, alongside the bachateros that paved Santos’ way.
On the day of premiere and for a week afterwards, the “House of Bachata” pop-up, located in Washington Heights, the heart of the Dominican diaspora, will take place at 421 W. 202nd St. at 10th Ave. from July 30 to August 6 from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The pop-up celebrates Dominican culture and bachata music with such iconic fixtures as a bodega, a barber shop and a salon. In partnership with the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute, the “House of Bachata” will showcase the history of the genre as well as highlight its greatest icons and their contributions, including Romeo Santos.
Programming and special events throughout the week will include an Opening Night VIP reception, Bachata dance class, documentary screening, children’s instrument class and more. Those interested can RSVP and see the complete list of programming at https://houseofbachata.rsvpify.com/
The documentary and the concert start streaming on July 30.
