“A just world is a sane world,” a lingering voice says. “There was nothing sane about Chernobyl.”

That’s the premise for HBO’s new miniseries, named after the devastating explosion that occurred on April 26, 1986, at Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine, Soviet Union.

The trailer offers a glimpse of the chilling events that occurred, focusing on the stories of those affected by the worst nuclear accident in history. Showing all that happened before, during, and after the incident, we see skies filled with smoke, birds falling out of the air, and gruesome injuries as radioactive material spreads by human touch, across Ukraine and into Europe.

Chernobyl stars Emily Watson (Breaking the Wave, Punch-Drunk Love), Stellan Skarsgård (Good Will Hunting) and Jared Harris (Mad Men, The Crown). It’s created by screenwriter and director Craig Mazin, who previously worked on The Hangover and Scary Movie film franchises.

The five-part miniseries debuts on HBO on Monday, May 6.
