Google has solidified a deal with CBS to carry the broadcast network on its soon-to-launch web TV service to be housed on the media giant’s YouTube platform.
With CBS already on board, Google is also in talks with 21st Century Fox and Walt Disney, which owns ABC, The Wall Street Journal reports.
The service, called Unplugged, is expected to launch in the first quarter of 2017. It would cost between $25 to $40 per month, and create a compelling skinny bundle targeted toward cable cord-cutters and subscribers looking for other, less expensive options to traditional cable packages.
While Unplugged would be separate from the ad-free subscription service YouTube Red a portion of YouTube Red content would still be available, according to the WSJ.
The move means Google will enter the ever-growing OTT field that includes Dish Network’s SlingTV, Sony’s PlayStation Vue, both of which launched last year.
Apple was also exploring its own online TV bundle with the launch of its latest Apple TV, but put those plans on hold due to pricing issues with content providers. And Hulu is also looking at developing a cable-style online TV service.
