Sunday night’s airing of the 73rd annual Golden Globes on NBC averaged a very respectable 18.5 million total viewers, down 4 percent from last year’s 19.3 million, according to Nielsen Media Research’s national time-zone adjusted ratings.
Part of the drop may be due to airing against a 15-minute NFL overrun on Fox. That game, the Green Bay Packers vs the Washington Redskins (the Packers prevailed if somehow you’ve missed this), scored a 10.7 rating/31 share in households and 33.05 million average viewers. But the game ran more directly into the red-carpet pre-shows, with only 15 minutes bleeding into the awards show itself.
Compared to the last time Gervais hosted in 2012, the awards show was up 10 percent.
Among primetime’s key demographic of adults 18-49, the Golden Globes scored a 5.5.
Perhaps keeping the numbers high: NBC elected not to stream the telecast to drive more viewership to the live broadcast, says Entertainment Weekly.
Brief Take: All we’re saying is: live TV.
