FX and Netflix came away the big TV winners of the night at the 2019 Golden Globes, although no network or streamer really dominated the competition.
FX won series trophies for the sixth and final season of Cold War spy drama The Americans and for Emmy-lauded limited series The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, while Netflix took home the comedy trophy for Chuck Lorre’s The Kominksy Method, starring Michael Douglas, who won best actor in a comedy, and Alan Arkin.
Versace and Kominsky were the only two TV shows to win in two categories, with both shows winning for series in their respective categories and for their leading men.
While Netflix beat out Amazon for best comedy, Rachel Brosnahan repeated as best actress in a comedy for season two of last year’s winner The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
On the drama side, Golden Globes co-host Sandra Oh won a best-actress trophy for BBC America’s Killing Eve, while Richard Madden won for Netflix and the BBC’s co-production of Bodyguard.
Darren Criss repeated his Emmy win for Versace, while Patricia Arquette won for Showtime’s Escape from Dannemora, directed by Ben Stiller. Arquette beat out double-nominee Amy Adams for HBO’s Sharp Objects. Adams’ co-star in that limited series, Patricia Clarkson, won for TV supporting actress, while Ben Whishaw took home a Globe for his supporting performance in Amazon’s A Very English Scandal.
While the Hollywood Foreign Press Association managed to spread the love between streamers and cable networks, the broadcast networks were completely shut out, although shows such as NBC’s The Good Place and Will & Grace and CBS’ Murphy Brown managed to score some nominations.
