Fox’s pairing of Star and Empire won the Wednesday night premiere race among adults 18-49, while CBS led in total viewers with new show SEAL Team, starring David Boreanz.
In its new 8 p.m. time slot, Empire — starring Terence Howard and Taraji P. Henson — returned for its fourth season at a 2.4 among adults 18-49 and 6.9 million viewers. That led into Queen Latifah-starrer Star at 9 p.m., which did a 1.8 among adults 18-49 and 5.5 million viewers.
CBS began the night with the 35th (!) season opener of Survivor, which attracted 8.09 million viewers and a 1.8 among adults 18-49.
That led into new series SEAL Team, which saw the most live-plus-same-day viewers with 9.7 million, although the show finished in second place among adults 18-49 with a 1.5.
Criminal Minds, opening its 13th season, finished out CBS’ evening with 7 million viewers and a 1.3 among adults 18-49.
ABC began the night with The Goldbergs fifth-season premiere, tying Survivor at a 1.8 among adults 18-49 and 6.2 million viewers. That was followed by Speechless, starting its sophomore season, at a 1.4 in the key demo and 5 million viewers.
Modern Family, launching its ninth season at 9 p.m., turned in a 2.1 among adults 18-49 and 7 million viewers. At 9:30 p.m., American Housewife, also in its second season, debuted at a 1.6 in the demo and 5.7 million viewers.
ABC closed out the night with the season-two premiere of Designated Survivor, which came in third out of three with a 1.1 among adults 18-49 and 5.5 million viewers.
NBC fell way back to earth after its huge Tuesday night with the This Is Us season-two premiere. At 8 p.m., The Blacklist did a 1.1 among adults 18-49 and 6.4 million viewers. At 9 p.m., Law & Order: SVU averaged a 1.4 in the demo and 5.6 million viewers. And at 10 p.m., Chicago PD tied Criminal Minds at a 1.3 in the demo, but took sole second place among viewers with 6.1 million.
The CW aired repeats of Arrow and Supernatural, which both averaged a 0.2 in the demo and 740,000 and 580,000 viewers, respectively.
