Fox’s streaming service has been conquering the digital realm since its launch more than a year ago, with Fox Now apps made accessible across nine different platforms, more than any other network. This week, the app came full circle by popping up on Xbox One – the offspring of its September 2012 debut platform, the Xbox 360.

The latest version of Fox Now offers Xbox One users on-demand full episodes of primetime favorite such as “New Girl,” “The Simpsons” and “Almost Human.” Accessing them, however, requires a double-layer of subscription hurdling for the wayward viewer, first over Xbox Live Gold to access the app at all, then over a participating cable, satellite or telco TV partner (which include AT&T, U-Verse, Comcast, DISH and other standards).

In addition to next-day-available episodes, those double subscribers will also find the usual array of special bonus features on Fox Now, including behind-the-scenes cast interviews, “X Factor” and “American Idol” performances, and hundreds more short-form videos. Fox Now app channels through the Xbox One OneGuide include Latest Episodes, Popular Episodes, Featured Shows and Show Extras, and for the gamer side of the typical Xbox One user, the app awards branded “Achievements” for successfully navigating its various activities.

Of the many platforms where Fox Now resides, Xbox One may be the most intriguing in terms of content possibilities, thanks to Xbox SmartGlass, the in-device app that creates a fluid connection between the TV screen and the viewer’s mobile device of choice. The system enables special mobile content that can unfold in real time along with the program currently being watched. The potential for extended experiences ranging from interactive companion guides to special guest commentary seems almost limitless, and Fox has already promised users, via a recent statement, “access to live-sync content for several FOX series… providing an immersive and intelligent second-screen experience in real time with live broadcasts.”
