After his high-profile departure from Restaurant Brands International broke Thursday, Fernando Machado on Friday confirmed he is joining Activision Blizzard as chief marketing officer. He starts April 12.

Machado became well known for his innovative campaigns for Burger King, and in 2018 Adweek named Grand Brand Genius. In 2019, Burger King won the Direct Grand Prix at Cannes for its “Whopper Detour” campaign.

In his new job, he’ll market such desktop titles as Call of Duty, World of Warcraft and Overwatch and mobile titles as Candy Crush to more than 400 million players globally.

Preceding Machado in the job at Activision Blizzard are Tim Ellis, who left to go to the NFL in 2018; Daniel Cherry III, who departed last fall to become SVP, general manager at WarnerMedia’s DC Comics; and current CMO David Messinger, who is leaving the company but staying on to help with the transition. Previously, Messinger held senior marketing roles at such companies as The Walt Disney Company and Ticketmaster.
