After a disastrous foray into the digital space last year, the Daytime Emmys are returning to television this with the telecast set to air on the CBS-owned Pop network, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced Monday.
The move puts the recently rebranded network in a position to help the ceremony rebrand itself, in a way, and move past memories of last year’s digital debacle. Pop was known as the TV Guide Network before its January relaunch.
The telecast of the 42nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards will broadcast live on April 26 from Stage 16 of the Warner Bros. Studios lot in Los Angeles.
Pop and NATAS are playing up Stage 16’s connection to iconic films such as Casablanca, Jurassic Park, and Ghostbusters in their publicity push.
“As a network that celebrates talent, we are thrilled to bring the Daytime Emmy Awards back to television for the fans,” said Brad Schwartz, President of Pop. “Daytime audiences are some of the most amazing and passionate in all of television, and we are proud to honor the greatest works and achievements of daytime. Adding premium live events to our schedule is just another exciting way we are building Pop. We’re going to have a lot of fun with this.”
The ceremony fits with Pop’s new mission to celebrate the “fun of being a fan.” The ceremony has traditionally relied more than other entertainment awards shows on the support and goodwill of fans — especially soap viewers — to generate buzz and fill seats.
Pop itself features soaps as part of its new programming mix, with evening broadcasts of CBS’ The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful.
NATAS on Monday also announced the Creative Arts portion of the Daytime Emmys will be handed out two days before the telecast, during a ceremony at the Universal Hilton in Los Angeles.
