Fans may not have liked where the Game of Thrones season-five finale ended up, but they certainly watched.
According to Nielsen’s Twitter TV ratings for the week ended June 14, the last episode of this season racked up a unique audience of more than 5.1 million people result in more than 47 million Twitter impressions, far more than the CMT Music Awards’ 18 million or so impressions. On Tuesday, HBO reported that 8.1 million viewers had watched the season finale, the show’s most-watched episode ever. Cue the pirating.
Still, #GoT’s Twitter entertainment TV dominance was far out-paced by Game 5 of the NBA Finals, which boasted a unique audience of nearly 9.5 million and more than 233 million impressions.
In the end, looks like real-life battles — even highly regulated ones on courts — outpace fantasy ones.
Still, the Game of Thrones finale attracted a lot of response from Twitter, where fans expressed shock, anger, denial and threats to end their HBO subscriptions.
